The crash happened northbound on Wednesday, Jan. 1 at around 11:10 a.m. in Bedford.
An initial state police investigation found the driver, Maribel Mota, 49, of Waterbury, Connecticut, operating a 2019 Toyota Corolla, in the area of mile marker 11.2, fell asleep while behind the wheel.
The Corolla drifted into the left guide rail, then across all lanes into the right guide rail, state police said. This caused the Corolla to spin and overturn before striking the left guide rail for a second time, according to police.
Mota and the front-seat passenger Maria Mota, age 29, were secured with seatbelts and sustained minor injuries, police said.
Three children in the rear seats were not secured with seatbelts and sustained serious, but believed at this time to be non-life-threatening injuries, said police.
Two of the children, a 16-year-old and an 8-year-old, were both ejected from the vehicle as it rolled with the two sustaining serious to critical injuries. The 12-year-old was not ejected.
Interstate 684 was closed until approximately 2 p.m. while emergency services helped the victims, and the state police processed the scene. A detour utilizing Exit 3N for Route 22 northbound was put in place at the time of the crash.
Bedford Fire Department, Armonk Fire Department, and Westchester Paramedics all responded to the scene to help the victims.
The investigation is ongoing.
